Trump Undergoes Medical Exam for Minor Swelling and Hand Bruising, Declared in Excellent Health

President Trump recently underwent a medical evaluation after developing mild swelling in his legs and some visible bruising on his hand, the White House confirmed Thursday. The tests revealed a common age-related vein condition, but doctors found no signs of serious health concerns.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared a statement from Trump’s physician during a press briefing, outlining the results of the president’s recent checkup. Trump, 79, underwent a comprehensive exam, including ultrasounds and a vascular study, to determine the cause of the swelling.

Doctors diagnosed him with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that occurs when leg veins struggle to efficiently return blood to the heart, causing mild pooling. The condition is frequently seen in older adults, particularly those over 70.

Importantly, the tests found no evidence of deep vein thrombosis—a potentially dangerous type of blood clot—or any signs of arterial disease.

Recent photographs showing discoloration on one of Trump’s hands also sparked public attention. According to the president’s medical team, the bruising is consistent with minor soft tissue damage—a result of frequent handshaking and routine aspirin use.

Leavitt confirmed the president is not experiencing any pain or discomfort. “As for treatment, I will defer to the president’s physician,” she added.

Later in the day, the White House released a detailed memo from Dr. Sean Barbabella, the president’s physician. The report reaffirmed Leavitt’s comments and confirmed that Trump also underwent an echocardiogram, which showed normal heart structure and function.

“There are no signs of heart failure, kidney issues, or systemic illness,” Barbabella wrote, concluding that Trump remains in excellent health.

This follows the president’s annual physical examination in April, which also found him fit and healthy. At that time, Barbabella stated, “President Trump exhibits excellent cognitive and physical health and is fully capable of carrying out the duties of Commander-in-Chief.”

Should he complete his current term, Trump will be 82 years old upon leaving office, making him the oldest sitting president in U.S. history—a milestone that has drawn increased attention to his overall health and stamina.

Despite public scrutiny, Thursday’s update adds to a growing record of clean bills of health from the White House medical team.
