Pakistan announced it plans to nominate President Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, praising his efforts to defuse rising tensions in South Asia. Last month, the Trump administration intervened diplomatically after India launched retaliatory airstrikes against Pakistan, an incident that resulted in dozens of casualties and heightened fears of a broader conflict between two nuclear-armed nations.
The Pakistani government credited Trump with helping avert what could have escalated into a devastating war, citing his “strategic foresight” and “stellar statesmanship” during a volatile moment. According to a statement posted on social media, Trump’s outreach to both Islamabad and New Delhi played a key role in calming tensions and securing a ceasefire.
Following the announcement, Trump responded on Truth Social by downplaying his chances of receiving international recognition. He said he doubted the Nobel Committee would ever award him a prize, regardless of the outcome of his efforts in various global conflicts, including those in Russia, Ukraine, Israel, and Iran. But he added that public support was more meaningful to him than any formal accolades.
Trump’s comment came just hours after brokering a treaty between Rwanda and the Congo, reinforcing his argument that his peace-building record often goes unrecognized by the international community.
The Pakistani government framed the Nobel nomination as a reflection of Trump’s continuing commitment to global diplomacy, highlighting his handling of the 2025 crisis with India as evidence of his pragmatic approach to peacebuilding. The statement also expressed hope that Trump’s leadership could help address other global flashpoints, including the Middle East.
In May, India launched a series of strikes that killed 31 people and injured dozens more in Pakistani-controlled regions. As the conflict escalated, Trump offered to assist in de-escalation while his vice president dismissed it as outside the U.S.’s interests. Just days later, Trump announced that both sides had agreed to an immediate ceasefire with U.S. diplomatic backing.
Pakistan described the outcome as proof of Trump’s dedication to resolving conflict through diplomacy, calling his intervention a genuine act of peacemaking. The White House has not commented on the nomination.
