President Trump is set to meet with his national security team in the White House Situation Room at 1 p.m. on Tuesday to discuss the United States’ response to the escalating war between Israel and Iran, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the planning.
The officials say Trump is seriously weighing the possibility of launching a U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure specifically the heavily fortified underground enrichment site at Fordow. The move would represent a major escalation and mark direct American involvement in the conflict.
Trump returned early from the G7 summit to focus on the situation. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he emphasized that he was not interested in temporary ceasefire arrangements. Instead, he said he wanted a complete resolution one that would end both the war and Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Though there had been internal White House discussions about meeting directly with Iranian officials this week, Trump suggested any such diplomatic step would depend on what unfolds once he’s back in Washington.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior defense officials believe Trump is likely to authorize strikes in the coming days, particularly targeting Fordow. So far, the U.S. has supported Israel’s missile defense efforts but has not joined in offensive operations.
Vice President J.D. Vance issued a public statement defending Trump’s approach amid criticism from some within the MAGA movement who oppose deeper involvement in another Middle East conflict. Vance praised Trump’s restraint but acknowledged that the president might be compelled to act further to prevent Iran from advancing its enrichment program.
Trump, meanwhile, posted several strongly worded messages on Truth Social in the lead-up to the high-stakes Situation Room meeting. He claimed the U.S. now has full control of Iranian airspace and dismissed the capabilities of Iran’s air defense systems as inferior to American technology.
In another post, Trump issued a veiled threat toward Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, warning against any attacks on U.S. personnel or civilians. He claimed the U.S. knows the leader’s whereabouts but said he is not currently a target. Trump added that American patience is “wearing thin.”
In a final post, he ended simply with the words: “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER.”
