Behind the Poll

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi began her political career in 1976 as a Democratic National Committee member from California. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1987 and has been a part of Congress ever since.

Pelosi represents one of the bluest districts in the country. She has not had a serious challenger in decades, and has not debated a political opponent since since 1987 when she ran against Harriet Ross.

Pelosi currently serves as the Speaker of the House, the third most powerful position in the U.S. government behind the President and Vice President. She previously served as Speaker from 2007 to 2011.
